Q&A: What are my chances of type 1 or 2 diabetes?

Question by : What are my chances of type 1 or 2 diabetes?

Best answer:

Answer by essentiallysolo
well obviously your risk is higher than most since there is diabetes in your family. If you eat right and exercise regularly you are not likely to develop type2, and if you can get to your 20s’ without symptoms it is unlikely that you have type 1.

Why would breast cancer be more important than other cancers?

Question by Gabry Hyrule: Why would breast cancer be more important than other cancers?

Best answer:

Answer by Sebastien
Two reasons:
1) Cancer that affect different parts of the body are not the same. Each tissue that develops into cancer has it’s unique properties such as metastatic potential, metastatic (spreading) patterns, susceptability to radiation and chemotherapy, speed of spread. For example, there are two common forms of skin cancer: melanoma and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Melanoma will spread quickly and if left too long has a high mortality rate. BCC invades surrounding tissue but won’t spread to other tissues like melanoma. Each cancer requires it’s own research team.

2) Also, a one large organization will end up having higher overheads as it deals with the paper work of trying to coordinate so many researches. This will mean funds will be used for paper work and not research.

Breast cancer has a lot of media coverage because it can affect younger women and has a higher disease burden than say prostate cancer which affects older men (usually). Also, the surgery (if appropriate) for breast cancer has many side effects including scarring. Older people still have images of radical mastectomies in their head (I’ll let you do a google image search).

Hope this helped.

It’s safe so long as the medical/nursing staff as completely aware of your condition and take this into consideration when performing the procedure. This means providing you with appropriate IV fluids when you are fasting for surgery, checking your BMs regularly and ensuring you receive your insulin when needed.

It is definitely inherited. My mother has it, most of her siblings. One of my cousins has it, but my sister, brother and I do not have it. I think it skips around.

What is the best diet to follow if Diabetes runs in your family?

Question by stuffy: What is the best diet to follow if Diabetes runs in your family?

Best answer:

Answer by dpb82
A diet low in fats and low in salt with lots of vegetables is the best diet. Try to stay away from empty carbs and eat mainly whole wheat things like bread and pasta. It is also really important to do regular exercise at least 3-4 times per week of strenous aerobic exercise for 30 minutes.

Another thing to consider is what type of Diabetes runs in your family. If it is type 1, it is more commonly hereditary and not diet associated. If it is type 2, you can affect the outcome more.

why does hepatic portal hypertension cause an enlarged spleen?

Question by : why does hepatic portal hypertension cause an enlarged spleen?

Best answer:

Answer by Sach
The spleen gets enlarged due to the back pressure in the portal vein… Remember that the portal vein is formed by the Splenic vein and the superior mesenteric veins. So any obstruction in the portal vein blood flow will cause obstruction in the blood flow in the Splenic vein as well. This causes congestion and enlargement of the Spleen.

Same situation happens in Carcinoma or Cirrhosis of the liver. The Carcinoma obstructs the portal vein blood flow, and causes an enlarged spleen. An enlarged spleen is the cardinal clinical finding in a person with Portal Hypertension :-)

Just read your question under additional details:

Back-pressure will cause spleen to increase in size because the blood gets pooled there.

Just imagine the portal system as plumbing or a network of pipes through which water flows, and the spleen would be at the end of the pipe, like a shrunk sponge. When there is a block in the pipe, the back pressure will cause the sponge to soak up more water, and in the process expand the sponge.. wouldn’t it? Similar analogy… :-)
